An hour in which the cello talks about the beauty of a life, its passions and its nostalgia. The programme moves from the Baroque into Italian cinema, Spanish colour and Buenos Aires tango, and closes in jazz.
The Retro Hall is small. There is no distance in a room this size: every listener sits a few metres from the instrument, close enough to hear the wood as well as the string.
The cello for this evening is an Italian instrument from a private collection.

Max Beitan is a Latvian cellist based in Lugano. He began studying at four, made his international debut at eight with the Kaunas Philharmonic, and has since taken five Grand Prix across eighteen international competitions. He studied with Daniil Shafran, Johannes Goritzki, Victoria Yagling, Natalia Gutman and Ivo Pogorelich, and has performed on instruments by Antonio Stradivari and David Tecchler.
In 2024 he represented Latvia at the 75th anniversary of NATO in Washington, D.C. He founded the Beitan Music Foundation and has curated exhibitions of Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati instruments at the Art Museum Rīga Bourse and at Villa del Balbianello on Lake Como.
